タイにおいて河川に沈んだ材から採集された菌を検討してVaginatispora aquaticaと同定し、本種をLophiostoma属に転属した。

本種は子嚢果が埋生～破出性、溝状の孔口を有し、子嚢胞子が狭紡錘形で厚い蝶形の鞘に包まれ、1隔壁を有することなどで特徴づけられた。

本種は分子系統解析でL. fuckeliiと姉妹群を形成し、他にMisturatosphaeria属菌がLophiostoma属菌と強く支持されるクラスターを形成した。
