Ramaria testaceo flava fruitbodies often strongly resemble those of taxa of subg. Echinoramaria, such as R. eumorpha. The strigose stipe base, brunnescent surfaces, brown branches and yellow apices all point in that direction. Moreover, unornamented ampulliform clamps and strong macrochemical reactivity support such placement, although these characters also occur in subg. Laeticolora. Only spore ornamentation definitively keeps the species in subg. Laeticolora. Petersen (1979) furnished a modern description for the species, augmented later from Canadian material (Petersen, 1986). In the earlier publication, the species was confused with R. spinulosa, now considered separate. The Chinese collections conform closely to the species description, supporting a distribution across the northern North Temperate Zone, with extensions southward where altitude and climate permit.
