中国四川省において枯枝に発生した菌を検討し、新属新種Synhelminthosporium synnematoferumとして記載した。
本種はHelminthosporium属菌に系統的に近縁であったが、シンネマを形成することなどで特徴づけられた。
また、Helminthosporium chengduenseおよびH. chinenseを新種記載したほか、2種の既知種を陸生環境から初めて報告した。

両種は形態的に非常に類似していたが、培養性状と分子系統解析により区別された。
複数遺伝子に基づく分子系統解析により、Helminthosporium属がマッサリナ科クレードにおいて多系統群を形成することを示した。
