本種はテレオモルフとアナモルフの両方を有し、偽柔組織の子座に子嚢殻が埋生すること、大分生子を形成することなどで特徴づけられた。

本種は一見ヒポクレア科菌類のような特異な形態を有しているにもかかわらず、分子系統解析では狭義のNectria属クレードに含まれた。
