notes

Fruitbodies of Phaeoclavulina gigantea are extremely similar to those of Ramaria gigantea, Lachnocladium zippelii var. gracilis, Lachnocladium echinosporum, and Lachnocladium olivaceum. Basidia are 2-4-sterigmate, and hyphal construction is identical. Differences in spore morphology were once used to keep R. gigantea separate, but scanning electron micrographs show little variation. Therefore, all four names are united here. The basidia in Phaeoclavulina gigantea are intermediate between the typical states of two sections, with 2-4-sterigmate basidia. Spores are cinnamon brown to ferruginous brown, with sharp spines and low prickles. [1]
