クイーンズランドコアラの鼻腔および生息環境から515菌株の酵母を分離し、種ごとの分離頻度を調べたところ、Cryptococcus neoformansの頻度が最も高かった。

また、D1/D2領域に基づく分子系統解析により、うち7菌株が2種の未記載種に相当することが明らかになった。

分子系統解析と資化試験などの結果を総合し、それらをCryptococcus lacticolorおよびRhodotorula oligophagaとして新種記載した。
