This North American described species is considered by Hallenberg and Eriksson (1985) as indistinguishable, in the absence of crossing experiments, from A. medium and A. ochroleucum described from Europe. They provide good drawings of the spores seen on the type specimens of these three species. Spores of A. medium are easily distinguished, those of A. ochroleucum less easily. However, the authors deem it necessary to distinguish the three species.[6]
