Collection REB 342 was found under conifers, rhododendron and mixed hardwood within a riparian zone. Harrison (1964) stated that H. cumulatum occurs under Pinus spp. including Pinus banksiana Lam. in Northern Michigan. No other information is available on associated hosts or habitat. This fungal species was recently reported in Britain, presumably ectomycorrhizal with Pinus sylvestris, fruiting along the edges of trails or paths in Scotland (Ainsworth 2011). Maas Geesteranus (1975) reported collections under Pinus from Netherlands, Vaccinium from Switzerland, and Picea from Czechoslovakia.[1]
