(The name R. effiguratum has been misapplied in Scandinavia, particularly for R. norvegicum. The species was correctly reported in 1988. Parasitic stages have not been observed in Norwegian material, although it often grows on species of the genus Pleopsidium elsewhere. Other yellow species of Rhizocarpon with 1-septate ascospores less than 18 μm long mainly include Norwegian R. norvegicum, dwarf R. pusillum, and R. superficiale. Norwegian R. norvegicum forms scattered to composite groups of areoles, contains stictic acid or no lichen acids in the margin, and often grows on species of the family Acarosporaceae when young. Dwarf R. pusillum forms smaller areoles, has a non-amyloid margin, and grows parasitically as islands in the thallus of the saxicolous lichen Sporastatia testudinea. Rhizocarpon superficiale has a non-amyloid margin, contains stictic acid or norstictic acid, and has no parasitic stages.)
