Craterellus cinereusの学名で記載された種にはクランプの有無が異なる2種が混在していた。
ライデンのハーバリウムに本種名で収蔵されている全ての標本を検討し、真の本種にはクランプが存在しないことが明らかにした上で、本種のネオタイプ標本を指定した。
クランプを有する別種をC. atrofuscusとして新種記載した。
